Making Unique Handmade Holiday Cards
Most people wait until at least Halloween before they start thinking about Christmas, but not yours truly. That’s because I love Christmas. Although I have to admit that I’m happy to move onto other things right after it’s over; by May I’m already starting to think about Christmas. It’s about that time that I begin scouring the Internet for new free Xmas clip art to expand my already large collection. That puts me ahead of the game when I start creating handmade holiday cards in the autumn. Because of that I don’t have to search for images when I’m ready to begin; I can just start creating the cards. Since that’s a lot of work in itself, I’m glad to have image searching out of the way.
One aspect I do leave until right before Christmas, though, is the creation of letters from Santa for the kids in my family. These can’t be mailed until the beginning of December because they actually have to be sent to a post office located at the North Pole for a postmark. They’re then mailed to each child in stamped envelopes I provide. The process takes less than 2 weeks, so I don’t want to mail them too early. Kids get hyped up enough about Christmas; they don’t need to get letters from Santa before they’ve even had Thanksgiving turkey! But it does bring me joy to see how much they enjoy getting custom letters from Santa. Because I create them, I’m able to put in details to promote the illusion that the letters really come from him. If they have toys they’ve been wanting, “Santa Claus” lets them think that they’ll only get them if they behave well. If there’s a lot of figthing between brothers and sisters at the time the letters are mailed, I also include that they have to get along with everyone in the family if they want their Christmas presents. Nothing like some good, old fashioned pressure from Santa to get kids to mind!
And I still can’t rest even after I get my Christmas cards and letters from Santa mailed. I always make handmade New Year cards for select friends and family members, as well as an electronic greeting for everyone else. For those I dip into my collection of happy new year clipart. I get quite elaborate with the handmade versions, since I don’t have to make that many. They’re a lot of fun to make and I love creating them.

- Unique specialty and metallic papers are available that you can use to frame the images by cutting pieces slightly larger than the artwork. These can be found at discount stores like Walmart, or at stores that specialize in craft supplies.
- Glitter pens do a great job of adding a bit of sparkle. Just don’t use too much! If you do, the cards will not only look cheesy, they will also warp.

The waiting list for one of his creations was several months long.
Gustave was a professional furniture designer who specialized in furniture recycling. He was always on the look-out for good pieces, visiting both estate sales and yard sales in his never-ending quest for used furniture. Twice a week, on the night before garbage-day, he cruised the streets in search of potential pieces. When he found one, he immediately brought it back to the shop, where he stripped it down and remodeled it. Cheap armchairs became stylish pieces of furniture fit for executive living rooms in his skilled hands. At a glance, he was able to distinguish genuine Pennsylvania Farmhouse dining sets from lesser copies. Even thick layers of paint could hide them from his sharp eyes.
Once in his hands, he would spend many long hours lovingly restoring a piece, no matter how mundane it’s nature. Shortly after purchasing the shop, his interest broadened to include all antiques when, quite by accident, he discovered a strange looking object on a back shelf. He did not have a clue as to what it was, but his inner alarm went off immediately. After doing some research, he was able to proudly claim to be the owner of a rare, nineteenth century bedpan.
Being the toast of the town is not easy for an artist such as Gustave. Despite the hardships, he manages to live with his fame. To lighten his load he finally has taken on an apprentice to whom he gave the single name of ‘Charles’. As for the bedpan, that now sits proudly in the collection of a minister whose name Gustave will not divulge.
